>杜鹃属鹃形目，杜鹃科，全球大约有60多种。杜鹃广泛地分布于全世界，特别是旧大陆的温带和热带地区。常栖息在森林和灌木丛中，颇为害羞。往往是只闻其声，不见其形。我们常根据它们的叫声来给它们命名。 普通杜鹃身长约16厘米，羽毛大部分或部分呈明亮的鲜绿色。大型的地栖杜鹃身长可达90厘米。多数地栖杜鹃呈土灰色或褐色，也有些身上有红色或白色的斑纹。有些热带杜鹃的背上翅膀上有像彩虹一样的蓝色。多种杜鹃的翅短。尾巴较长，有的特别长。尾巴羽毛的尖端还点缀着白色。地栖杜鹃的腿比树栖杜鹃长。脚掌前后有双趾。喙粗壮结实，有点向下弯曲。 多种杜鹃最惹人注目的特性是把蛋下在别的鸟类的窝里，靠其他鸟来帮它孵化。这种“寄生”的方法对提高小杜鹃的生存能力倒也很有好处。那些自己养育子女的杜鹃则用树枝把窝筑在低矮的灌木丛中，蛋由父母轮流孵化。小杜鹃孵出来以后父母双方共同喂养。
