Jasper National Park, Canada, Date Unknown
Photograph by Dean Conger
Bright red fruit clings to the branches of high bush cranberry growing in Canada's Jasper National Park. Though they don't have quite the same taste as traditional cranberries, the high bush variety is quite tasty when the berries are young and would make a fine replacement at the Thanksgiving table. (Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Heart of the Canadian Rockies," June 1990, National Geographic magazine)

Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, 1970
Photograph by James L. Stanfield
Hawthorne bushes ascend upon the remains of a split-rail fence on Massachusetts' Nantucket Island. The tiny island, a horseshoe-shaped chip of land located 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Cape Cod, is home to about 10,000 permanent residents. That number blooms to about 50,000 in the warmer months when tourists and summer residents descend. (Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Life's Tempo on Nantucket," June 1970, National Geographic magazine)

Denmark, 1997
Photograph by Sisse Brimberg
Poppies bloom next to a lichen-covered seawall in the handsome and civilized country of Denmark. A land of five and a quarter million souls, Denmark is sandwiched between the North Sea and the Baltic, just north of Germany. (Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Civilized Denmark," July 1998, National Geographic magazine)

Coventry, Vermont, 1997
Photograph by Michael S. Yamashita
The beauty of autumnal maple leaves appears through a screen door. Just as the green summer fattens and strengthens the creatures of Vermont, fall cuts crisply into the bounty by sending migrating animals south, silencing chirping birds and insects, and running deer and bear out of the forests until hunting season ends. (Text adapted from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Vermont: Suite of Seasons," September 1998, National Geographic magazine)

Vermont, 1997
Photograph by Michael S. Yamashita
During peak foliage season—generally the first two weeks of October—great numbers of visitors flood into Vermont to enjoy the scenery. Although the dazzling display may vary in intensity from year to year, it seldom disappoints. (Text adapted from "Leaves of Autumn: A Vermont Sampler," Autumn 1984, National Geographic Traveler magazine) (Photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Vermont: Suite of Seasons," September 1998, National Geographic magazine)

Near Willow City, Texas Hill Country, 1998
Photograph by Vincent J. Musi
"Deep in the heart of Texas, the Hill Country's limestone heights bend with the Balcones Escarpment and unfold west for some 200 miles [322 kilometers]…nowhere else in Texas is the show of wildflowers, such as purple vervain and fiery Indian blanket, more profuse—and striking—than here." (Text from and photograph shot on assignment for, but not published in, "Texas Hill Country," April 1999, National Geographic magazine)
