Massonia is another special South African species that I love growing. If you have the space and the time, plus you are willing to take a little extra care, these will grow well for you.Massonia is from the Hyacinthaceae family, named after Francis Masson, an Aberdonian sent from Kew Gardens by Sir Joseph Banks to collect plants in South Africa. He sailed with Captain Cook in The Absolute in 1772.
They have broad, fleshy leaves which lie flat on the ground with a stemless tuft of flowers between them. They are best suited to pot culture and need to remain fairly dry most of the time. Massonia are wide-spread in the Cape Province area as well in the south-west. They are winter-growing needing a dormant period in summer. They need to be kept completely dry during this period or they will rot.
The Massonia bulb is covered with tunics and produces two broad-shaped leaves opposite each other. These lie flat on the ground. So, be careful when you plant these bulbs in pots. You should fill the pot fairly full with mix, otherwise the leaves will not grow out flat. They will reach the side of the pot and then have to grow up, which makes them un-shapely.
The flower (inflorescence) is an erect spike with many flowers. They seed easily and the seeds are usually very viable and are round and black. They need a very well-drained soil and prefer to be kept on the dry side. The first year I grew mine, I lost some bulbs because of over-watering, so this needs to be watched. Also, they need a very dry, dormant period over summer and minimal watering during the growing season. Sow seeds early in the autumn season. Leave them in these pots until about the third season and then pot them up in new mix. They will reward you immensely, if you look after them.
They will usually flower in the third season. Keep them away from frosts as this will turn the soft, flat leaves mushy. They need a sandy mix; I usually use half mix and half sand.
